The Lasting Damage of Toxic Managers

Many organizational leaders underestimate the negative impact of toxic managers in the workplace.  Maybe the manager is a significant “producer”.  Maybe you anticipate an ugly reaction if you take any significant action to address the issue.  But no matter the reasons we may hesitate to address these situations, it’s important to consider the lasting damage to your organization that a toxic manager can cause.

High turnover, low morale, employee apathy, decreased productivity, and the possible creation of a hostile work environment are just a few of the hazards of retaining managers who are callous, cruel, or abusive.  In addition, toxic managers can indirectly erode employee trust in the overall organizational leadership.  When a toxic manager’s bad behavior remains unchecked, very often our best people will leave, and those who remain working for a toxic leader won’t be happy, productive, or efficient.  They will (understandably) be more focused on protecting themselves than on their work or what’s best for the organization.

Do you have a toxic manager on your team but aren’t sure how to address the situation?  Has it been allowed to continue for so long you‘re not sure if anything can be done?  It may be helpful to seek guidance from an outside professional.  I’m happy to help you strategize options for addressing the situation before the damage to a team or your organization as a whole is irreversible.  It’s never too late to take action!
